Question 1

What is the exact YouTube thumbnail size?

Accepted Answer

YouTube currently recommends 3840×2160 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio. The minimum width is 640 pixels; 1280×720 remains a practical compatibility or smaller-file preset.

Question 2

Can a YouTube thumbnail be larger than 2 MB?

Accepted Answer

It depends on where you upload. YouTube currently documents a 2 MB limit on mobile and a separate 50 MB limit on desktop for video thumbnails.

Question 3

Why does my YouTube thumbnail look blurry?

Accepted Answer

A low-resolution source, tiny text, or aggressive compression can all look blurry after downscaling. Start with the 3840×2160 recommended preset, then preview actual feed sizes before export.
